My Business Does Not Show Up in ChatGPTThe 10-Minute Diagnosis and the Five Causes That Fix Differently

Quick summary

When ChatGPT recommends businesses and yours never comes up, there is a specific reason, and it is one of five: AI crawlers blocked at some layer, no indexed answerable pages for the search layer to retrieve, no independent sources corroborating that you exist, a site machines cannot summarize, or a stale identity the model keeps repeating. Every guide on this topic hands you the same generic tip list. This one starts differently: four test prompts you run yourself in ten minutes that identify which cause is yours, because the fixes are completely different and doing them in the wrong order wastes months.

Key facts at a glance

ChatGPT and your business in 2026

Last updated

Two brains
ChatGPT answers from trained knowledge or live web search. Each fails differently and fixes differently.
No submission form
You cannot list a business with OpenAI or pay for placement. Visibility is earned from the sources it reads.
Where citations come from
Wikipedia and Reddit drove over 25 percent of US ChatGPT citations, per 5W Research, Q1 2026. No other domain exceeded 3 percent.
Volatility is normal
Reddit went from roughly 60 percent of ChatGPT answers to about 10 percent in six weeks, per Semrush’s 230,000-prompt study.
The traffic is real
ChatGPT referral traffic hit an all-time high in May 2026, up 36.7 percent in one month across 101,574 sites, per SE Ranking.
Five causes
Blocked crawlers, no indexed answers, no corroboration, an unparseable site, or a stale identity. The diagnosis below finds yours.

The 10-minute diagnosis

Do not start with tips. Start by finding out which problem you actually have, using ChatGPT itself as the diagnostic instrument. Run these four tests in order and note what happens. Use the free version or any paid one, it does not matter, but pay attention to whether web search is on or off for each test, because that is the whole point of the first two.

1

Test the model’s memory

With web search off, ask: What do you know about [your business name] in [your city]?

This tests trained knowledge only. Most small businesses fail this test, and that is fine. It matters only as the baseline for Test 2.

2

Test the retrieval layer

Same question, with web search on. Watch whether it finds your site, and read how it describes you.

If it cannot describe your business even while searching the live web, you have a technical problem, cause 1 or 2. If it describes you vaguely or wrongly, note the exact wording, that points at cause 4 or 5.

3

Test the recommendation

With search on, ask the question a customer would: Who is the best [your service] in [your city]? Then two or three natural variations.

This is the test that pays your bills. Note every business it names and every source it cites. Those sources are the exact places you need to appear.

4

Test the door

Check whether AI crawlers can reach your site at all: request your homepage with an AI user agent such as OAI-SearchBot, and read your robots.txt for AI bot rules.

A 403 or a challenge page means a block at the edge, a security plugin, or your host, and it overrides everything else you fix. The AI crawler guide walks through this test step by step.

What each result means

Match what you saw to a row. The verdict column separates the results that are normal from the ones that need work, and each row points to the cause it implicates.

What you sawVerdictWhat it means
Test 1 fails but Test 2 succeeds: ChatGPT only knows you when web search is onUsually normalNormal for almost every small and mid-size business. You are not in the model’s trained knowledge, and you do not need to be. The searched answer is the one your customers see, so your work is winning the retrieval layer: causes 2, 3, and 4 below.
Test 2 fails: even with web search, ChatGPT cannot describe your businessNeeds a fixA retrieval failure. Either your site is not indexed and crawlable, cause 2, or AI crawlers are blocked at some layer, cause 1. Run Test 4 to tell the two apart before touching anything.
Test 3 recommends competitors but never youNeeds a fixThe corroboration deficit, cause 3. The sources ChatGPT synthesizes for your category, listicles, review rankings, forum threads, mention them and not you. Your own website cannot outvote a chorus of independent sources.
ChatGPT describes your business wrongly: old services, wrong location, a stale identityNeeds a fixCause 5. The model learned an outdated or conflicting version of you, usually from inconsistent directory data or an old site version, and keeps repeating it. Fix the sources, then the answers follow.
Test 3 returns only generic advice with no business names at allDependsSome categories get generic answers by design, especially regulated or risk-sensitive ones. Test with several phrasings a real customer would use. If names never appear for anyone, the recommendation surface is small in your category and the priority shifts to the queries where names do appear.
Test 4 shows a 403 or challenge page for an AI user agentNeeds a fixCause 1, blocked at the door. Common since Cloudflare began blocking AI crawlers by default in July 2025, and a block at the edge overrides anything your robots.txt says. Our AI crawler guide covers every layer and fix.

How ChatGPT actually picks businesses

ChatGPT has two ways of knowing anything, and the difference decides your strategy. The first is trained knowledge: what was baked into the model when it was built. Famous brands live here. Your business almost certainly does not, and that is not the problem it sounds like, because trained knowledge is not where recommendations come from for local and small business questions. The second is live retrieval: when you ask who the best plumber in your city is, the assistant runs web searches behind the scenes, reads what comes back, and synthesizes an answer with citations. That searched layer is the one you can win on a timescale measured in weeks, not model releases.

What does it read when it searches? Independent sources, weighted heavily. In 5W Research’s analysis of roughly 600,000 US ChatGPT citation events from early 2026, Wikipedia at 13.15 percent and Reddit at 11.97 percent together drove over a quarter of all citations, and no other domain exceeded 3 percent. Read that second half again: outside the two giants, citations scatter across thousands of ordinary sites, review platforms, local listicles, directories, niche blogs. For a business, that scatter is the opportunity. You do not need Wikipedia. You need to be present in the handful of scattered sources that come up for your category and city, and Test 3 just showed you exactly which ones those are.

Two more numbers frame the stakes. The sources shift constantly: Semrush tracked 230,000 prompts across 13 weeks in 2025 and watched Reddit go from being cited in close to 60 percent of ChatGPT responses in August to around 10 percent by mid-September, so anyone optimizing for a single source is building on sand. And the channel is growing anyway: SE Ranking measured ChatGPT referral traffic across 101,574 websites and found it hit an all-time high in May 2026, jumping 36.7 percent in one month after ChatGPT started linking brand names directly in answers. The assistants are becoming a referral channel with real customers on the other end, which is exactly why the diagnosis is worth ten minutes of your time.

The one-line version

ChatGPT recommends businesses that independent sources vouch for and that machines can read. Be both, in the sources it actually cites for your category.

The five causes, and the fix for each

These are ordered the way we check them on a real audit, because each one gates the next. There is no point earning listicle placements while a Cloudflare rule is returning 403 to every AI crawler that comes knocking.

1

Blocked at the door: AI crawlers cannot reach your site

How to confirm it: Test 4 fails: a request with an AI user agent returns 403 or a challenge page, or your robots.txt disallows the answer bots. Cloudflare has blocked AI crawlers by default for new domains since July 1, 2025, and that block sits at the network edge, invisible to your robots.txt.

The fix: Allow the answer bots, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, at every layer: robots.txt, Cloudflare AI Crawl Control, security plugins, and your host. You can keep blocking training crawlers separately if you choose. This is a genuine 2-hour fix.

2

Invisible to the search layer: no indexed, answerable pages

How to confirm it: Test 2 fails while Test 4 passes. Your site is reachable but the retrieval layer has nothing to retrieve: pages not indexed, or no page that plainly says what you do, who you serve, and where. Check your indexing in Google Search Console and check your presence on Bing, because ChatGPT’s search does not read Google results.

The fix: Fix indexing first if pages are not indexed at all. Then build pages that answer real customer questions directly: a clear services page, a plain-language About page, location and FAQ pages with the answer in the first sentence. Machines cite what they can extract.

Fix pages that are not indexed

3

The corroboration deficit: nobody else says you exist

How to confirm it: Test 3 names competitors and not you. Search the listicles and review rankings for your category and city: if you are absent from all of them while competitors appear on several, the model has no independent evidence to recommend you on.

The fix: Earn presence in the sources AI actually cites for your category: complete and consistent business profiles, real reviews on the platforms that rank, placement in the best-of articles customers already find, and genuine participation where your customers ask questions. In 5W Research’s Q1 2026 analysis, Wikipedia and Reddit alone drove over 25 percent of US ChatGPT citations, and outside those two no domain exceeded 3 percent, so coverage must be broad, not one big placement.

4

An unparseable site: you exist but machines cannot summarize you

How to confirm it: ChatGPT finds your site in Test 2 but describes you vaguely or generically. The usual culprits: homepage copy that never states what you do in plain words, services buried in sliders and images, no schema markup, and no page a machine can lift a clean answer from.

The fix: Rewrite key pages answer-first, state the who, what, and where in the first paragraph of the homepage, add Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ schema, and put concrete facts, prices, service areas, hours, in extractable text. This is the same structure that wins Google AI Overviews citations without top rankings.

5

A stale or conflicting identity: the model knows the wrong you

How to confirm it: ChatGPT describes services you dropped years ago, an old address, or mixes you up with a similarly named business. The web still says the old thing somewhere, old directory entries, an unclaimed profile, a previous site version, and the model synthesizes the conflict.

The fix: Hunt down every version of your business identity and make them agree: name, address, phone, and description across your site, business profiles, and directories. Update or close stale listings. Consistency is what lets a model treat you as one confident entity instead of hedging between two.

What does not work

The saturation of advice on this topic has produced a matching supply of shortcuts, and they range from useless to harmful. Buying guaranteed AI placement does not work because no such product exists, there is no ad unit inside ChatGPT recommendations to buy. Spamming Reddit with self-promotion gets accounts banned and threads deleted, and the model reads the deletion. Stuffing an llms.txt file with marketing copy does nothing, because no major AI company has committed to reading the file at all. Publishing a burst of thin AI-generated pages about your own greatness fails twice: the search layer demotes it, and it adds zero independent corroboration, which is the currency that actually buys recommendations.

The uncomfortable truth of AI visibility is that it is mostly earned in public, on sites you do not control, over months. That is also why it defends so well once you have it: a competitor cannot buy their way past two years of real reviews, genuine forum presence, and consistent coverage. The work compounds. It just does not compound from a one-time blast, which is why we sell it as a monthly practice and not a setup fee.

What to do this month, in order

1

Run the four diagnosis tests and write down which outcome you got. Ten minutes, and everything else follows from it.

2

If Test 4 failed, unblock the answer bots at every layer this week. It is the only cause with a same-day fix and it gates all the others.

3

Fix the one page that matters most: make your homepage state what you do, who you serve, and where, in the first paragraph, in plain text.

4

Claim and complete your business profiles on Google and Bing, and make your name, address, and phone identical everywhere they appear.

5

Find the three listicles or rankings that come up when you ask the category question, and start the outreach to get included.

6

Add FAQ schema to your most-asked question pages, and answer each question in the first sentence.

7

Re-run the diagnosis in 30 days and compare. If the needle has not moved and you want it handled, that is what we do every month.

Want the whole thing done for you? Our monthly SEO and AI search plans start with a $199 audit that includes exactly this diagnosis, what ChatGPT and Claude currently say about you, which of the five causes apply, and a 90-day roadmap that is yours to keep. Every plan includes a live dashboard showing how often the AI assistants mention your business, so you watch the answer change instead of taking our word for it.

ChatGPT business visibility FAQ

Can I pay OpenAI to get my business listed in ChatGPT?

No. There is no submission form, no paid listing, and no advertising product that inserts your business into ChatGPT answers. Anyone selling guaranteed ChatGPT placement is selling something that does not exist. Visibility is earned indirectly: ChatGPT mentions businesses it has learned about from its training data and businesses it finds when it searches the live web to answer a question. Both paths run through the same inputs, a clearly described business on a crawlable site, corroborated by independent sources like review platforms, directories, forums, and articles. That is what you can actually influence, and it is what the five causes on this page diagnose.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors but not me?

Because the sources ChatGPT reads mention them and do not mention you. When ChatGPT answers a question like best plumber in your city, it typically runs live searches and synthesizes what comes back: local listicles, review site rankings, directory pages, Reddit threads, and news mentions. If your competitors appear on three best-of lists and a heavily upvoted Reddit thread and you appear nowhere except your own website, the model has one independent voice for you and a chorus for them. This is the corroboration deficit, cause four on this page, and it is the most common reason an established business with a fine website loses the AI answer. The fix is earning presence in the specific sources the model actually cites for your category, which you can see by running the diagnosis prompts.

How long does it take for ChatGPT to notice changes I make?

It depends which brain you are trying to change. The live search layer updates fast: once your improved page is crawled and indexed by the search engines ChatGPT uses, it can appear in searched answers within days to weeks. Third-party mentions work on the timeline of those sites being crawled, also days to weeks. The trained knowledge inside the model itself updates only when a new model version ships, which happens a few times a year, so being baked into what ChatGPT just knows takes months and sustained presence. This is why the practical strategy targets the retrieval layer first: it is the part that moves on a schedule you can influence, and it is where most business recommendations actually come from today.

Do I need a Wikipedia page for ChatGPT to know my business?

No, and for most small businesses pursuing one is wasted effort because Wikipedia notability standards will not accept a typical local or small company. Wikipedia matters enormously for how models understand famous entities, and in 5W Research analysis of roughly 600,000 ChatGPT citation events in early 2026, Wikipedia was the single most cited domain at about 13 percent. But for business recommendations, the sources that matter are the ones that cover businesses your size: review platforms, local and industry directories, best-of articles, Reddit and forum threads, and local news. A business with zero Wikipedia presence and strong coverage across those sources gets recommended all the time. Chase the sources that will actually take you.

Does ranking well on Google mean ChatGPT will mention me?

It helps but it does not transfer automatically, and the overlap is looser than most people expect. ChatGPT is not reading Google results: its live search runs on its own crawling and third-party search technology, so your Google position is not directly inherited. What does transfer is the underlying quality that earned the Google ranking: crawlable pages, clear answers, and third-party corroboration. There is also a structural shift to know about: Ahrefs found only 38 percent of Google AI Overview citations came from pages ranking in the top 10 for that query, down from 76 percent six months earlier. Machine answers increasingly cite well-structured relevant content regardless of classic rank, which cuts both ways: strong rankings are not sufficient, and their absence is not disqualifying.

What about Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini? Is the fix different?

The mechanics are the same and most of the work transfers, with platform-specific details at the crawler layer. All of these assistants combine trained knowledge with live retrieval, all of them favor clearly structured content and independent corroboration, and all of them read largely the same web. The practical differences are which crawler you must allow: ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, and Google-Extended for Gemini training, and which sources each leans on hardest, which shifts over time. Semrush tracking through 2025 showed citation patterns diverging sharply between platforms and changing within weeks. That volatility is why we track mentions across ChatGPT and Claude in a live dashboard on our monthly plans rather than optimizing for a snapshot.

Is llms.txt required to show up in ChatGPT?

No. The llms.txt file is a proposed convention, a plain-text summary of your site for language models, and adding one is cheap and cannot hurt. But no major AI company has committed to reading it, and there is no evidence it moves recommendations on its own. Treat it as a finishing touch, not a fix. If your business is invisible to ChatGPT, the cause is one of the five on this page, blocked crawlers, a weak search footprint, missing corroboration, an unparseable site, or a stale identity, and an llms.txt file resolves none of them. Do the diagnosis first, fix the actual cause, then add llms.txt at the end because it costs five minutes.

Does this work for local service businesses, or only online brands?

Local service businesses are where AI recommendations are moving fastest, because a large share of assistant questions are exactly the kind that end in a recommendation: who should I call for this, near me, that I can trust. The inputs are the same five causes, with a local flavor: your business profile data on Google and Bing must be complete and consistent, your name, address, and phone must match across directories, your reviews on the platforms AI reads must be real and recent, and local best-of coverage matters more than national press. A local business that gets those right can outrun bigger competitors in AI answers, because the model is synthesizing local sources where thin coverage is the norm and a little effort stands out.
